Policy recommendations for sustainable manure and nutrient management

The SuMaNu project has produced policy recommendations for more sustainable manure and nutrient management in the Baltic Sea region. The recommendations have now been finalized, after receiving feedback from national stakeholders in dialogue sessions held in each partnering country.

The recommendations focus on farm and system-level changes and knowledge transfer. The six policy recommendations are following:

Policy recommendation 1: Development of coherent P fertilisation policies in the Baltic Sea Region

Policy recommendation 2: Fertilization planning and nutrient balancing

Policy recommendation 3: National standards for handling and spreading manure

Policy recommendation 4: Regional nutrient reallocation

Policy recommendation 5: Minimal use of harmful substances and careful manure processing ensure safe recycling of manure nutrients

Policy recommendation 6: Knowledge transfer between farmers, advisors, researchers, authorities, and policymakers
